Hyundai Capital America seeking $1.2 billion credit line
California-based HCA is an indirect, majority-owned subsidiary of HMC. It provides financing for the acquisition of Hyundai and Kia cars by U.S. dealers and consumers through dealer floor plan arrangements, retail installment contracts, and leases.
International banks have been invited to bid on the global deal, which will mainly target North American lenders, the source added. Four to five banks are already involved in the deal another source said. HCA is hoping to complete the deal by the end of the year.
U.S. subsidiary HCA has the same rating as parent HMC which will allow it to raise funds at a similarly competitive level.
Both companies are rated BBB+ by S&P and Baa1 by Moodys after Moody's upgraded HCA's rating from Baa2 on November 2 and revised its outlook from stable to positive.
U.S. subsidiary HCA was last in the loan market for a $150 million three-year loan in December 2010.
HMC increased quarterly net profit by 13 percent to $2 billion, Reuters reported on October 25.

But compared to other Internet calling options for the home, Skype's solution is a piecemeal and complicated way to save money. All the same, some Skype fans may appreciate the new cordless phone with a built-in Skype function.
We tested the phone along with the new Freetalk Connect-Me phone adapter, which Skype sells for $40. That price includes an hour calling. For an additional $20, you can get free calls to the U.S. and Canada for a year. Calls to people on Skype (as opposed to those reached by dialing a number) are free, no matter where they are.
The adapter is a small box that plugs into a power outlet. You connect cables to your Internet router, your phone jack and your home phone.
When you make a Skype call, the adapter diverts the call from the external phone line to your Internet connection. But first you have to pre-program the adapter to recognize certain speed-dial numbers as corresponding to Skype contacts or phone numbers. Since it's truly a "black box" - with no buttons or screen - you reach it through your computer's Web browser.
This clunky setup prevents you from making impromptu Skype calls. Because your phone isn't designed to work with Skype, you can't access your Skype address book directly on the handset, or see who's online to take your calls. Since home phones don't have cameras, you won't be able to do video calls.
On the plus side, the phone lets you receive Skype calls at any time, without having your computer on.
But what really sinks the Skype adapter in my esteem is the sound quality. On calls to international and domestic phones, there were odd hissing noises in the background and voices were muffled. One person I called heard her own echo, a common phenomenon on poorly configured Internet phone systems.
The audio improved greatly, to the level of a good cellphone call, when I ditched the adapter for the other recent Skype release, the GE Digital Cordless Expandable phone. It costs $70 with 400 minutes of calls thrown in. For another $20, you get a year of calls to the U.S. and Canada and 200 minutes of calls to international phones.
It looks like any cordless phone, except it has a prominent "Skype" button. It can make and receive regular phone calls, and the buttons and screen make it a lot easier to make Skype calls than it is with the adapter. The phone shows you which of your Skype contacts are online, and when you dial a number, you can choose whether to route it through Skype or the phone company.
It sounds good to be able to choose between the boring old phone company and the jazzy new Internet guerrilla for every call. But how much money will that really save you?
Most plans from phone and cable companies already include unlimited domestic calling, so there isn't much point to running those over Skype. Their international rates, though, are good. And of course, calls to Skype contacts are free.
But if you call the same few people overseas over and over again, and they're not big Skype users, there's another way of making cheap Skype calls from your home phone, without the use of an adapter or special phone. You can sign up for the To Go service on Skype's website. If you give it an international number that you like to call, it will give you a local number back. Call that number from your home phone, and Skype connects your international call at its rates, rather than the phone company's. It's like a calling card, but without the hassle of entering a bunch of numbers on the phone. (A competitor called Rebtel has a similar service.)
The drawback to Skype To Go is that you can only call phone numbers - it won't connect you to Skype users for free.
Now, it looks like you could reap some really big savings by eliminating your home phone service altogether in favor of the Skype phone or adapter. After all, Skype charges about as much for a year's worth of service as a phone or cable company does for a month.
But Skype isn't set up as a replacement for a landline, and points this out at every opportunity. For one thing, you can't call 911 on it. Also, Skype doesn't give you a phone number, unless you pay another $18 per three-month period. Without a phone number, you can make outgoing calls, but you can't receive them. The exception would be any Skype call routed to your username. Try giving that to the doctor's office! And even if you pay for a phone number, it will be a new one - you can't move your existing home number over to Skype.
See what I mean about a piecemeal solution? It's like you have to pay for every little piece of the puzzle.
To really break free from the phone or cable company, you need a full-service Internet calling product, like those sold by Vonage Holdings Corp. or Ooma. Both support 911 calls, and let you move over your phone number. Ooma's sound quality is practically indistinguishable from a regular landline.
Skype is a victim of its limited ambitions when it comes to home phone service. It wants to be an Internet phone company, but doesn't want to bother with all the regulation and nitty-gritty details that come with the "phone company" part. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft Corp., which is planning to buy Skype for $8.5 billion, will take it in a different direction.

Hon Hai's subsidiary Foxconn CMMSG Industria de Electronicos Ltda bought the 1.42 million-square-meter (350-acre) site from Toulouse Incorporacao SPE LTDA, it said in a statement without elaborating.
Hon Hai, also known internationally as Foxconn, is the world's largest maker of computer components and assembles products for Apple, Sony and Nokia.
The company has said that it planned to invest $492 million to build a new facility in Sao Paulo, Brazil to produce smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices.
The company has been working in Brazil since 2003, and already operates four factories in Latin America's biggest economy.
Tax breaks offered by the Brazilian government as well as proximity to fast-growing local markets have made Brazil an attractive alternative for manufacturing operations to China, it has said.
Chrysler to boost output of 2013 Rams, V-6 engines at Detroit-area plants
The moves represent about $238 million in further investment in the Detroit area and will add 1,250 jobs, a Chrysler spokeswoman confirmed. A formal announcement is planned at 11:45 a.m. at the Mack plant with Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing.
The engine production increase will ease the company's tight supply of 3.6-liter V-6 engines, which power most of Chrysler's lineup of larger sedans, minivans, pickups and SUVs. Pentastar production could be any variation, including 3.6- and 3.2-liter versions, the company said.
Chrysler also is set to announce a $40 million investment in a portion of the Trenton Engine plant in suburban Detroit.
Trenton builds the 3.6-liter V-6. Soon, it will begin making a 3.2-liter version for the upcoming replacement of the Jeep Liberty, as well as additional inline-four Tigershark engines that are now built only in Dundee, Mich.
Chrysler said it would add the third shift at Warren Truck in the spring, but didn't offer a more specific date. The third shift has been discussed since before the company debuted the re-engineered 2013 Ram pickup, which began arriving in dealerships late last month. The pickup has a new optional powertrain that pairs the 3.6-liter V-6 with Chrysler's Torqueflite eight-speed transmission to deliver fuel economy of up to 18 mpg city/25 highway.
Chrysler sold 238,815 Rams this year through October -- a 20 percent gain over last year in an overall market that has gained 14 percent.
Changing plans
The Mack II plant, part of the Mack Engine complex that was idled last year, had been considered as a site for assembly of the Maserati Levante, which was to have been built alongside the Jeep Grand Cherokee at Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly plant in Detroit. But Marchionne, also the CEO of Fiat S.p.A., revealed a new production plan on Oct. 30 that moved production of the Maserati SUV back to Italy.
Speaking to reporters after the announcement, Marchionne said he hopes Chrysler's re-engineered Ram 1500 pickup could knock the Chevy Silverado out of the No. 2 slot in the segment, behind the Ford F-series.
"We're seeing very stable demand on the truck side, and we've had some success in positioning our product lineup," Marchionne said, mentioning the Ram's 25 mpg highway fuel economy. He said the pickup "has the highest level of technology in the segment, and I expect it to do very well."
Santander talks
Marchionne was cryptic when asked about Chrysler's reported talks with Spanish lender Santander to replace Ally Financial as the automaker's preferred lender, and whether it might lead to Chrysler once again having a captive finance arm.
"Reality shapes itself in a variety of ways. Just wait," he said.
The 60-year-old CEO did spend time discussing how the ongoing crisis in Europe is harming Fiat and other automakers. He said Fiat, though hurting, is still profitable because it has worldwide operations to offset losses in Europe. But the situation in Fiat's home continent is growing desperate.
"We're reaching levels of instability where some of the other players don't have a balanced portfolio of geographies, and so they're taking it all on the chin," Marchionne said. "That becomes such a painful succession of blows that eventually, you cave in."
Cash running out?
He said efforts by individual European nations to prop up their car companies at the expense of others call into question whether the European Union itself is sustainable.
"The system is unstable, and it needs to be fixed," Marchionne said. "If you look at the collective losses that we have, that Ford has, that GM has, and that Peugeot has in the European arena, the collection is enough to choke a horse."
Jaguar Land Rover global sales rise 7% in October
Tata said sales at the luxury British unit rose to 27,897 compared with the year before, after falling in September for the first time in 14 months. Jaguar sold 3,339 vehicles last month and Land Rover delivered 24,558, Tata said in a statement on Thursday.
Tata Motors, part of the salt-to-steel Tata Group conglomerate, sold a total of 100,660 vehicles in October. Overall passenger car sales stood at 49,264 vehicles, down 5 percent from a year earlier. Commercial vehicle sales rose 19 percent to 51,396.
Earlier this month, Tata said second-quarter net income rose 11 percent to 20.8 billion rupees ($384 million) from 18.8 billion rupees a year earlier, with profit at JLR up 77 percent to 305 million pounds ($488 million).
Despite the profit rise, deliveries at Jaguar declined for four straight months through September, while sales that month at Land Rover expanded at the slowest pace since December 2009.
Tata has grown dependent on JLR, which it bought from Ford Motor Co. for $2.3 billion in 2008, as domestic sales of its own models struggle.
Tata has said it plans to invest $12 billion in the unit over five years.
China production
JLR is turning to emerging markets such as China, Russia and South Africa to pursue growth. The unit received written approval from China's main industry planner to form a venture with Chery Automobile Co. and begin making cars in the world's biggest auto market.
The venture, to be based in the eastern city of Changshu in Jiangsu province will have a production capacity of 130,000 vehicles annually, according to a statement posted recently on China's Ministry of Environmental Protection's Web site.
Rocket U Engineers Push Aerial Boundaries
Engineers at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida continue to stretch
their intellectual legs with projects outside their specialties. A team
of participants in Rocket University is building a fuel cell-powered
unmanned aerial vehicle and support systems to perform missions such as
wildlife surveillance around the expansive space center."One of the goals is to get people exposure to some of the more contemporary technologies," said Michael Dupuis, who is leading the unmanned aerial systems group. Dupuis worked on the space shuttles' fuel cell systems, including the power reactant storage and distribution system, or PRSD.
The goal basically is to build a 9-foot-wide airplane with a narrow fuselage that can pilot itself over the iconic Kennedy landscape without jeopardizing landmarks such as the Vehicle Assembly Building and launch pads.
It will run on a fuel cell that uses hydrogen and collects oxygen from the air to produce electricity.
"It's still an electrical vehicle, but it has more endurance than battery-powered aircraft," Dupuis said.
The aircraft will carry a small camera and be able to capture precise images and statistics on the wildlife that live inside the 140,000-acre wildlife refuge at Kennedy. It is the same kind of information human observers collect from helicopters while counting creatures, such as manatees.
Apart from developing an aircraft, known as an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, or UAV, the project also must account for all the things that go into operating it, planning its flights and collecting information from the mission. It is in this network, called the UAS, with "systems" replacing "vehicle," that Dupuis said real advances can be made in the project.
Consider, for example, that no unmanned vehicle has ever flown in Kennedy airspace. All the aircraft have had pilots in the cockpit. So getting Kennedy managers used to the idea of unmanned aircraft buzzing around the area has taken some work.
"Just the fact that a UAS went through the process to be certified to execute a mission out here and to go execute that mission, that's going to be new ground for Kennedy," Dupuis said. "I've gained an enormous respect for program and project management. I'm getting an absolutely world-class education in systems development and technical project management."
The adjustment is more than academic since Kennedy is going to play a larger role in the future in certifying rockets and spacecraft for flight as the spaceflight business expands into non-traditional areas.
"One of the goals is to get people exposure to the certification of flight hardware," Dupuis said. "It's coming here but hasn't traditionally resided here in the past."
Rocket University is far from simply presenting technical challenges to overcome. It is as much about learning how to move a team of engineers through a series of steps, including peer reviews to complete a mission using NASA practices that have governed scores of missions.
That doesn't mean the task is a grind through bureaucratic checklists, participants said. In fact, they said it's a lot of fun.
"I'm proud and encouraged by what this team has produced, what these individuals have produced for the project," Dupuis said. "These are world-class technical minds, but I know that a lot of what they're doing is outside their comfort zone and they are consistently rising to the occasion."
Beyond the challenges of building an aircraft and letting it fly on its own, the Rocket University participants routinely turn their education into inspiration. Engineers visit classrooms to show middle and high school students the delight of learning then using math and science to build cool things and make them do things that haven't been done before.
"The earlier you can get somebody excited about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM education), the better," Dupuis said. "We're developing mini-labs we can take into primary and secondary schools to try and ignite that spark of interest even earlier."

A Hybrid Sedan That Doesn't Drive Like One
The original Honda Accord Hybrid — one of which averaged an underwhelming 23.8 mpg during its 29,960-mile long-term stay at Edmunds — certainly was a quick car, but it taught Honda a painful lesson: People buy midsize hybrid sedans for fuel efficiency, not for brisk acceleration.Ford understands this, a point underscored by the new 2013 Fusion Hybrid and its class-leading EPA fuel-economy ratings of 47 city/47 highway mpg. That's nearly as efficient as a Toyota Prius, and significantly better than the first-generation Fusion Hybrid's 41 city/36 highway mpg. Moreover, it's a substantive step up from competitors such as the Toyota Camry Hybrid (43/42) and the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid (35/43).
With that in mind we had to wonder: Might the amazingly efficient new 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid sacrifice every shred of driving enjoyment at the altar of fuel economy?

More Normal Than You Might Think
As drivers of the previous Fusion Hybrid can attest, it's much like driving a standard car with a gasoline engine mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Twist the conventional ignition key and you won't hear a starter crank the engine, but the instruments illuminate to indicate the car is ready for use. No engine is running, but when the gear selector is pulled back into Drive, the car will want to creep forward on battery power.
Acceleration from a stoplight is good, given the inherent torque of the electric motor. The car is also remarkably quiet inside, aided by triple-sealed doors and an active noise-cancellation system that works via the car's sound system. The transitions from electric power to gasoline and back (and any combination thereof) are seamless, although astute drivers can sense the gasoline engine kick in through slight vibrations in the steering wheel and pedals.
Surprising 'Mini' Supermassive Black Hole Found in Unlikely Home

The little monster was spotted in NGC 4178, a spiral galaxy about 55 million light-years from Earth that is quite flat and lacks a concentration or bulge of stars at its center.
Theoretical models had predicted that bulges are necessary for supermassive black holes to form and grow. But the new observations from NGC 4178 and four other bulgeless galaxies where black holes have previously been found challenge these assumptions and suggest more than one mechanism is at work in forming supermassive black holes. Researchers have speculated that these behemoths could feed on the disks of galaxies or the haloes of mysterious dark matter that surround galaxies instead of a cluster of stars at the center.
Based on the properties of the black hole's X-ray source in the Chandra image, the researchers think the black hole in NGC 4178 is rapidly sucking in material from its surroundings. The team, led by Nathan Secrest from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., also thnks light generated by this infalling matter is heavily absorbed by gas and dust around the black hole.
The researchers also found three other X-ray sources in the Chandra image, the brightest of which may be a medium-size black hole with a mass about 6,000 times that of the sun.
The research is detailed in the July 1, 2012 issue of The Astrophysical Journal.
Ping-pong robot learns to play like a person
A ROBOT that learns to play ping-pong from humans and
improves as it competes against them could be the best robotic
table-tennis challenger the world has seen.
Katharina Muelling
and colleagues at the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany
suspended a robotic arm from the ceiling and equipped it with a camera
that watches the playing area. Then Muelling physically guided the arm
through different shots to return incoming balls.
The arm was then left to draw on its
training to return balls hit by a human opponent. When the ball was in a
position it had not seen before, the arm used its library of shots to
improvise new ones. After an hour of unassisted practise, the system
successfully returned 88 per cent of shots.
Other robots have played table tennis in the past, but none have used human demonstration to learn the game. Ales Ude of the Jožef Stefan Institute in Slovenia says that doing so allows robots to play more like people.
The work,
which will be presented at an AAAI symposium in Arlington, Virginia,
next month, is part of a broader goal to develop robots that can do a
range of tasks after being guided by their owners, Muelling says.
